Glorimar es cineasta boricua, guionista-directora y artista interdisciplinaria. Su trabajo como directora y guionista abarca el cine de ficción, documental e híbrido, la instalación audiovisual y la fotografía. Su práctica está anclada en una estética feminista y decolonial, y explora temas como la violencia colonial, la degradación ambiental, la memoria y la resistencia, centrándose especialmente en experiencias afrocaribeñas y puertorriqueñas.
Su primer largometraje, La Pecera, tuvo su estreno mundial en el Festival de Cine de Sundance 2023 y se convirtió en la primera película puertorriqueña nominada al Goya a Mejor Película Iberoamericana (2024). La película recibió múltiples reconocimientos internacionales, incluyendo el Premio a Mejor Película en el Cyprus Film Days y el Gran Premio del Jurado en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Seattle. También fue nominada a Mejor Película Latinoamericana en los Premios Forqué y obtuvo dos nominaciones a los Premios Platino.
En 2024 estrenó la comisión documental Mujeres Latinas en Acción: Una historia de 50 años de gestación, y actualmente desarrolla los títulos Agua Brava (coproducción entre Illinois y Puerto Rico) y El grito de la trinitaria (coproducción entre Puerto Rico y España), un drama social seleccionado en la sección Proyecta de Ventana Sur 2024, organizada en colaboración con el Marché du Film de Cannes.
Entre sus proyectos interdisciplinarios destaca la instalación UNDERWATER / BAJO AGUA, aún en desarrollo, que aborda el legado colonial y la contaminación ambiental en la isla-municipio de Vieques. Sus obras en video Revuelo en la Roosevelt y Juana(s) Matos forman parte de la Colección Permanente del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC). Ha desarrollado además proyectos audiovisuales comunitarios como Cotía, Alto del Cabro y La Josca, donde combina el documental, la experimentación y la fotografía como lenguajes narrativos.
Es fundadora de Canica, entidad dedicada a la producción de cine, fotografía y proyectos multimedios centrados en historias del Caribe. Ha recibido el apoyo del Tribeca Film Institute, del Programa IBERMEDIA, EAVE, AmDoc y el National Endowment for the Arts, entre otras instituciones.
Glorimar ha sido artista en residencia en el Bellagio Center de la Fundación Rockefeller, Studios at MASS MoCA, la Universidad de Princeton y la Universidad de Chicago. Su obra ha sido presentada en América Latina, el Caribe, Europa y Estados Unidos. Actualmente vive y trabaja entre San Juan y Chicago.
Glorimar Marrero Sánchez is a Puerto Rican filmmaker, writer-director, and interdisciplinary artist. Her work as a director and screenwriter spans fiction, documentary, and hybrid cinema, as well as audiovisual installation and photography. Her practice is rooted in a feminist and decolonial aesthetic, exploring themes such as colonial violence, environmental degradation, memory, and resistance, with a particular focus on Afro-Caribbean and Puerto Rican experiences.
Her debut feature film, La Pecera (The Fishbowl), premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and became the first Puerto Rican film nominated for the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film (2024). The film received numerous international accolades, including Best Film at the Cyprus Film Days and the Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Latin American Film at the Forqué Awards, and received two nominations at the Platino Awards.
In 2024 she premiered the commissioned documentary Mujeres Latinas en Acción: A 50-Year History in the Making, and is currently developing the titles Agua Brava (coproduction Puerto Rico - Illinois) and El grito de la trinitaria (coproduction Puerto Rico - Spain), a social drama selected for the Proyecta section at Ventana Sur 2024, in collaboration with the Marché du Film at Cannes.
Among her interdisciplinary projects is UNDERWATER / BAJO AGUA, a video installation currently in development that addresses the colonial legacy and environmental contamination in the island-municipality of Vieques. Her video works Revuelo en la Roosevelt and Juana(s) Matos are part of the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (MAC). She has also created community-based audiovisual projects such as Cotía, Alto del Cabro, and La Josca, where she blends documentary, experimental practices, and photography as narrative tools.
She is the founder of Canica, a platform dedicated to the production of film, photography, and multimedia projects centered on Caribbean stories. Her work has received support from institutions such as the Tribeca Film Institute, IBERMEDIA Program, EAVE, AmDoc, and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others.
Glorimar has been an artist-in-residence at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, Studios at MASS MoCA, Princeton University, and the University of Chicago. Her work has been presented across Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States. She currently lives and works between San Juan and Chicago.
